American Airlines Boeing 787-800 Seat Review

The Boeing 787-800, or 788, is a dual-aisle aircraft designed for long-haul travel. It has a number of amenities such as electronic window shades and mood lighting. While this aircraft is principally designed for international travel, the American Airlines Boeing 787-800 is sometimes used on domestic routes. I flew it from Las Vegas to Dallas recently. It was a great flight.

I wrote previously about breakfast on this flight. This was the perfectly standard AA domestic meal service. I also have a short video of the seat. The same seat is marketed as first class on domestic flights and business class internationally. There were a number of features I really liked. Perhaps most importantly, each seat feels incredibly private. Since seats are angled and in a zig-zag pattern, you can create the illusion of being by yourself. It also helps that each seat has direct aisle access.

The electronics of this seat are excellent. You will receive a video game controller which adjusts the seat and the in-flight entertainment (IFE). The controls were easy to master. Each seat also has two power plugs and ample storage. Each passenger has what amounts to infinite legroom, and I enjoyed the IFE choices. The premium cabin also has plenty of space in overhead bins. I loved that, because I hate having to rush onto the plane to make sure I have a place to store my bag.

What’s not to love on the American Airlines Boeing 787?

There were a couple of odd things about the seat. It took me a while to master the electronic window shades. They do not get as dark as shutting a regular shade. However, the window shades work well enough if you are patient as they adjust. There also isn’t a great place to store a backpack or other small bag. While you can certainly put that in an overhead bin, that makes it inaccessible when the seatbelt sign is turned on.

Ultimately, however, these are quibbles. The seat is comfortable and there is plenty of power. There is plenty of storage for small items. That makes it easier to get what you need out of the bag and store it. I enjoyed a nice meal and a good movie. I could have laid flat for a nap if I wanted. The American 788 is a great aircraft in the premium cabin.
