I wrote last year about regional jet first class service onĀ American Airlines (or American Eagle). For those of us who fly out of smaller markets, having this first class product is a great option. I had the opportunity to fly this product December 29 between Phoenix and Houston. This is a longer flight between two larger markets, so I wanted to update my original post. This flight was also scheduled to have a dinner service. This is not a great first class product, but it is much better than any domestic economy class flight. IAH Admiral’s Club in Terminal A

The door to the IAH Admiral’s Club in Terminal A.

American Airlines has made a lot of improvements to their Admiral’s Club lounges over the last year. They are offering a wider variety of snacks, and my personal favorite is the guacamole available every afternoon. Then again, two kinds of free soup or the free fancy coffee machine are also nice. Of all the improvements they have made, however, one is particularly important to me. In 2017, AA re-opened the long-dormant IAH Admiral’s Club in Terminal A. They did a great job of remodeling, and this is a fantastic addition for those of us flying American out of Houston’s George Bush airport. Continue reading “IAH Admiral’s Club in Terminal A”

American Airlines domestic first class meal experience

Mixed nuts and bourbon appetizer on American Airlines.
Mixed nuts and bourbon appetizer on American Airlines. The American Airlines domestic first class meal almost always starts with nuts and a drink– Woodford Reserve bourbon, in my case.

I wrote earlier about the first class meal options available on American Airlines from DFW to LAS. We took that trip on December 26. This flight is typical of most mid-con (halfway across the continent) flights with them, so it is a good opportunity to explain American Airlines domestic first class meal service. Given the constraints of serving hot food in a moving airplane, American does awfully good work for a short flight. Then again, a stiff glass of bourbon makes a lot of things better. Has American Airlines solved its Christmas pilot shortage?

It was widely reported yesterday that American Airlines had roughly 15,000 flights in December without a pilot or co-pilot (or both). Apparently, for 3 hours on Friday, November 24 American allowed too many pilots to take time off. Those extra vacation days were from December 17-31. It turned out that pilots wanted to take leave at the holidays just like everybody else, so a sizeable chunk of American’s 200,000 or so December flights were left without a full crew. Things got worse when the pilot’s union objected to American’s solution of offering pilots time and a half to take the flights. Happily, it looks like things may be taking a step in the right direction. Continue reading “Has American Airlines solved its Christmas pilot shortage?”

First class meal options on American Airlines from Dallas to Las Vegas

First class meal option on American Airlines from Dallas to Las Vegas. One of the real advantages American offers is the ability to pre-order your meals up to 30 days in advance.

One of the real advantages American Airlines offers is the ability to pre-order your meals if you are travelling in first class. Anywhere from 30 days in advance until 24 hours before flight departure, you can select the meal you would like. That means you know you will get your first choice, and quite often some of the meal choices are only available if you pre-order. For example, when travelling to Japan one has to pre-order the Japanese meal. Today, I am going to tell you what options American has available for our flight from Dallas (DFW) to Las Vegas (LAS) next month. It looks fantastic, and it should be a great way to start the trip. I will, of course, provide a better review after we have taken the trip. Continue reading “First class meal options on American Airlines from Dallas to Las Vegas”
