Olympia Grill in Galveston, TX

Shrimp cocktail and a martini at Olympia at Pier 21 in Galveston, Texas.

We took a cruise earlier this year and got to Galveston a day early. I already wrote about the fantastic lunch we had that day, and by dinner the rest of our party had showed up. When we cruised in 2015 out of Galveston, our party of 6 had eaten at Olympia Grill on their Seawall location. This year, however, we were a party of 12 and wanted to eat on the harbor side nearer the cruise pier. We called and made reservations at Olympia Grill at Pier 21. They were able to accommodate our very large party, and we got great seats outside on the water. It was a fantastic way to spend our last regular meal on land. Fisherman’s Wharf in Galveston

Outdoor seating at Fisherman’s Wharf in Galveston, Texas.

My family has always loved Galveston as a vacation spot. We were there before a cruise on the Navigator of the Seas in 2015 and again before a cruise on the Liberty of the Seas in 2017, and it is also a great destination in it’s own right. We wanted to get our cruise vacation off to a strong start, so we started with lunch at one of our favorite spots– Fisherman’s Wharf, which is located walking distance from the cruise piers.  It is a Landry’s outpost, and I normally try to stay clear of big chain places when I am on vacation, but they do awfully good work with seafood in a very nice setting. If the weather permits it, ask for a table outside on the pier. Continue reading “Fisherman’s Wharf in Galveston”

Special Burgers at Grub

The Wagyu Burger is the current market burger at Grub in October 2017.

I previously reviewed Grub Burger in Midland, TX, and this is not that post– a comprehensive review of the restaurant.  The basic review remains the same. It is an amazing hamburger that you have to decide is worth paying for. Earlier today my kids and I made exactly that decision, and we went to eat there after church. I am writing this to talk about two of the burgers we tried– the Wagyu Market Burger and the Mac n’ Cheese burger. The former is a special item for a limited time, and the Mac n’ Cheese burger is a regular item on the menu. Continue reading “Special Burgers at Grub”

Bubba’s 33 in Midland and Odessa

Bubba’s 33 in Midland and Odessa has a ton of TV pretty much everywhere showing any ongoing sporting event worth watching.

I am torn. In a perfect world, I resent having to choose between good food and good service when I go to a restaurant. When compelled to choose, I prefer the good food. The biggest part of why I go to a restaurant is to eat something delicious that I cannot easily prepare at home. That said, I also eat out because I can do things I can’t at home– for example, I can sit on my bum, wait for people to bring me stuff, and then have them clean it up and take it away. Good service matters less than good food, but it matters too. Happily, most restaurants don’t make me choose between the two. Sadly, Bubba’s 33 in both Midland and Odessa does. I eat there because the food is consistently good, the prices are reasonable, and I love the atmosphere of having lots of televisions on to watch lots of games of sportsball. I keep waiting a couple of months between visits because every time I go, something weird happens service wise which makes me want to not go back for a while. Updated Breakfast Menu At Rosa’s Cafe

The new breakfast menu at Rosa’s Cafe.

Earlier this year I wrote about the new breakfast menu being served at Rosa’s Cafe (a chain in Texas, principally in Western Texas), and yesterday I wrote that they appears to be offering dine-in breakfast service. I got the chance to try the new breakfast menu today, and I think I found a new favorite breakfast spot. It isn’t the same as my favorite greasy spoon breakfasts (regardless of cuisine), but it is a great choice for a leisurely weekend breakfast with the family.
