If you are flying to take a cruise out of Galveston, one of the more annoying chores can be getting from the airport to the cruise terminal through some Galveston Shuttle Service. Galveston does not have its own airport, thus you must fly into one of the two Houston airports.
Your best choice would be Houston Hobby as it is much closer to Galveston. The distance from that airport, to my hotel in Galveston is 43 miles, which would take about 50 minutes. But, as a Southwest hub, this may not work for you. So, many will fly into Bush. IAH, also known as Bush Intercontinental Airport, was 70 miles from my hotel. That maps at 1 hour and 16 minutes. So, you will have to make the decision about what tradeoff is best for you. As I was meeting my parents, who were flying in from a place with no Southwest services, we ended up going to IAH and meeting up there.
What are the Galveston shuttle options?
Either way, you will need to book a Galveston Shuttle Service. On my recent cruise on the Liberty of the Seas on July 21st, I flew in two nights early and had to get to our hotel, the Galvez. For this trip I used SuperShuttle’s Black Car service. As you may know, SuperShuttle offers shared van rides to various points from an airport pick up. For the trip from Bush to Galveston, for a shared van, non-stop, SuperShuttle was charging around $193. But, for only a slight upcharge, to $203, I was able to get a dedicated SUV, with the driver meeting us in baggage claim. Moreover, I was able to put a gratuity on when I booked my ride so that I did not have to worry about digging out a tip, a convenience I really liked.
This was a great experience. The SuperShuttle app told us our drivers name when we landed and we were able to track exactly where he was on the provided map. Our driver, Jesus, met us holding a sign with our name at the luggage carousel, helped us with our bag, offered us a drink, then we were on our way. The drive was good, and was a solid start to our vacation. I greatly value ease and convenience in my Galveston Shuttle Service, and this could not have been any easier. Yes, there are cheaper ways to get to Galveston from the airport, such as Uber or even a Taxi, but, you have to wait for pickup and you do not get this level of service.
