I used to *hate* flying through Reagan National Airport (DCA). It was great for convenience. However, the terminals didn’t connect and the facilities were limited. Over the last few years, however, Reagan has gone through a fairly major renovation. All of the gates now connect. More importantly for American Airlines passengers, there are now three Admiral’s Clubs at Reagan National. The newer DCA Admiral’s Club may be one of the nicest in the network.
What do the DCA Admiral’s Clubs Have in Common?
So sure, at some point an Admiral’s Club is an Admiral’s Club. They all have the same bar, and they pretty much had the same snacks. It is Sunday afternoon, and I am transiting Reagan Airport on a four hour layover. You can easily get to all three clubs, and today all of them have chicken tikka masala, two soups (tortilla and broccoli cheddar), desserts, and their standard charcuterie spread. The well bourbon is Evan Williams, which is great for something free at the point of service.

There are two really important things that each of these locations has in common. The first is that the views are just gorgeous. All of them have great views over the tarmac. There are also several great views over the Potomac River. The second thing is that none of them are crowded. American operates essentially all of the C, D, and E gates in Terminal 2, and from the looks of things on the tarmac and in the terminal this is a busy afternoon. I am presently in the C Club, and I have also been in the D and E clubs. It has been super easy to find seating in all three.
What makes the Reagan Airport Admiral’s Clubs Different?
Honestly, I would just go to whichever club is closest to your gate. They aren’t *that* different. However, the Terminal C (it’s not actually a Terminal, but it feels weird to keep saying “the one by the C gates) club is the smallest of the group. It also probably has the best views of the river. The Terminal D Admiral’s Club (again, not a proper terminal) is also older, but it is considerably larger. Terminal D also has a lovely quiet working space tucked away in the back. That is great if you need to, say, work on your travel website. Terminal D also has an old-school changing room inside their men’s room if you need to change clothes.

The newest, largest, and nicest club is located by the D gates. It gives off the feeling of being a very large living room. If you have four hours to kill, this would be the one to check out. In terms of amenities it is pretty standard. It is just newer and nicer. The extra space also has benefits such as making it easier to navigate the buffet. They also have a second food service area. with yogurt and fruit and related items.
American does a great job with Admiral’s Clubs at Reagan National. It has been a decade since I was here, and that was for a trip to Washington. In the intervening years, it looks as if AA has built DCA into a veritable mini-hub. They built the club capacity to match, and kudos to them.
