We think Galveston is an excellent vacation destination in its own right. Galveston cruise port is our favorite, and we always stay for a couple of days before a cruise. We will share our experiences with hotels, AirBnBs, restaurants, and tourist attractions. We will even tell you convenient places to park!
When we sailed this Summer, we had a big group. We wanted to eat dinner together, but not many restaurants are equipped to seat 14 people. Happily, we stumbled on Stuttgarden Tavern. It is located near the cruise pier, and they have cavernous seating both indoors and out. The grub at this Galveston restaurant isn’t fancy. It is, however, very good.

I always recommend getting to Galveston at least one day in advance of your cruise. You don’t want to risk a late flight on departure, and Galveston is an excellent vacation destination on its own. If you get there early, however, you will want something to do. We walked to the Galveston Pleasure Pier from our hotel. There probably isn’t enough there to pass an entire day. However, it is a great way to pass a beautiful Summer evening.

I never get to town on the same day my cruise leaves. There is too much risk that something goes wrong, and I don’t want to miss the start of my cruise. Also, I almost always sail from Galveston. Galveston is one of my favorite vacation spots anyway. That begs the question of where to stay. I have previously stayed all over the island. We stayed at the Hampton Inn for our last cruise, and the Notorious P.I.G. stayed in an AirBnB this Summer. My favorite place, however, is the Hotel Galvez. Different parts of our group had a suite and a PURE room. I will tell you about both, and then I will share the public facilities at this amazing hotel.

For us, cruising out of Galveston isn’t just about the cruise. It is also about Galveston. We enjoy the city, and we always get there a couple of days early to enjoy it. Normally, we enjoy our first meal at Fisherman’s Wharf. This time we decided to try Willie G’s. This wasn’t our favorite spot in Galveston, but it was still a solid place to have lunch.

Our family loves to travel, but securing hotel accommodations with two adults and four kids isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Suites are expensive, adjoining rooms are not as common as you’d think, and trusting your kids to behave while sleeping down the hall is a dicey proposition. Fortunately, these days, there are options like AirBnB that allow you to find and rent a house, apartment, or condo of any size and configuration you can imagine directly from the owner, usually at or below market rate for a hotel room of similar quality. For example this past summer we needed a place to stay for two nights before sailing with Royal Caribbean out of Galveston. A Galveston AirBnB was the right solution for us.
