Retro by Voltaggio

If you were a kid in the 1970s and 1980s, there is just a way food was. Your mom did it that way. Your friend’s mom did it that way if you were over at his house. Every church potluck did it that way. That is now comfortable and familiar to you, but it is hard to find. You have the money for better choices anyway. Retro by Voltaggio in the Mandalay Bay Las Vegas brings back all of those happy memories and combines them with a fun and upscale dining experience.

When I go to Vegas with my friends, I am usually looking for an upscale experience. You might check out my posts on staying at the Delano or the Bellagio VIP Lounge Experience to get an idea of what I usually look for. That meant that I was not initially looking forward to Retro by Voltaggio, because it lists basically all of the dishes I ate in 1979. I had been there and done that. Wow, was I wrong. Retro takes all of those familiar comfort foods and kicks them up several notches. The decor is phenomenal too. I encourage you to check out the Dine Drink Vegas YouTube review to get a sense of the place.

As Vegas prices go, the place doesn’t even cost too much. When we were there Labor Day 2023 most of the entrees cost less than $50. Some were a lot less. Many of the entrees now cost more, but they are served family style and can serve multiple people. They have a great deal, though. When we dined, a 4 course tasting menu cost $99. That meant the three people in our group got to try pretty much the entire menu.

We had so many good things. The appetizer course and the salad course were great. The YouTube video has all the details if you want them. However, for me the real stars of the show were the entree round. I had the Wagyu beef pot roast, and another buddy had the VoltaggiO’s. We each insisted that our own dish was the best thing they had, and we were both right. The third guy in our group also had the pot roast, and he didn’t really offer an opinion. He just ate and made it clear that he was unwilling to share.

VoltaggiO’s are made with house made pasta.

The decor in Retro is also phenomenal. It looks for all the world like the Voltaggio brothers pulled their childhood things out of their mom’s garage and put them in the store. That made for a fun dining experience, but it did not take away from the upscale nature of the meal. The pot roast was still Wagyu, and the pasta rings were still house made. This place was everything happy about eating 40 years ago, and they just did it better. I am going to go back, and next time I am bring my co-workers in their 20s and 30s so they will know what they missed.
